From the Ritz to Betty’s

Former Gateshead College catering student is now passing on her skills to others at one of the country’s most famous tea rooms.    

Catherine Smith, from Alnwick, studied the Level 2 Professional Cookery course before landing her dream job as pastry commis chef at the prestigious Ritz London Hotel. After more than three years with the top hotel, she is now passing on her talents to aspiring chefs at Betty’s Cookery School in Harrogate.

Since qualifying, Catherine has been keen to pass on her skills to others and has even returned to Gateshead College to run a masterclass for students, passing on the top culinary tips she’s mastered during her time in the industry.

Catherine said: “It’s amazing to be able to go back to college and help current students. I really value the opportunity to keep that link with the college which helped start my career and be able to give something back by becoming a mentor. If I can help just one person to get a job in these difficult economic times, it will have been worthwhile.

“The course gave me a great platform to launch my catering career at one of the world’s most renowned luxury hotels and now I’m following my real passion, to teach others in the kitchen. Studying catering at Gateshead College is the best thing I could ever have done. The teachers are amazing and I still keep in touch now, they gave me the necessary skills that employers need and it can set other students on the path to long-term success, both professionally and personally.”
