This course has been developed in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and helps you to develop the knowledge you need to become a Teaching Assistant.

Work Placements

You will take part in work placements as part of this course to give you the practical skills and knowledge you need and to fully understand the role of a Teaching Assistant. Placements will be at least one day a week and must be in a school in Key Stages 1, 2, 3 or 4. You will need to find your own placement before you start the course.

Course Content

The course covers the following:

  • Provide support for learning activities

  • Support children's development

  • Help to keep children safe

  • Contribute to positive relationships

  • Provide effective support for your colleagues

  • Support literacy and numeracy

  • Display work


Days & Times

Tuesdays 12noon to 3pm or Tuesdays 5pm to 8pm.

An interview is required and a DBS check is required.

Qualifications needed

2 GCSEs grade C (4) or above in English and maths.

You will need to have a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check before starting this course.

Required experience

We welcome all applicants without any prior experience or knowledge in this area. You will need motivation to achieve and have a passion to gain skills enabling you to progress this as a career in the future.

This course is free if you are aged under 19 years old.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced price course fees, depending on your circumstances.
