Runs Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
Do you have a passion for food and would like a career in professional cookery? This year-long, nationally recognised qualification will help you develop the skills and knowledge that the fast-paced industry requires. You’ll increase your professional skills and gain the techniques required to work in the modern hospitality and catering industry.
Throughout the course, you will train in our professional standard kitchens studying techniques in preparing and cooking different types of dishes including pastry, bread, shellfish, meat and poultry and soups, stocks and desserts. You will be assessed throughout the course in both practical and theory work.
Tuesday evenings are theory based and run until March. Wednesdays are kitchen based and run until June. Assessment is mainly through observation of practical workand learners have the opportunity to be re-assessed. The assessment takes place throughout the year rather then being based on an end test or exam, so you will have plenty of opportunities to achieve the required standard.
You will need to purchase a Gateshead College kit and uniform to study on the programme. Details of how to buy this will be available during the course induction.
On completion of the course, you can progress into the hospitality or catering industry. Salaries start at around £15,000 and you could progress to earn well over £30,000 as a head chef. If you would like to continue your training, you can progress onto our Level 3 in Professional Cookery.
