Do you have a passion for food and fancy a career in professional cookery? This year-long, nationally recognised qualification will help you develop the skills and knowledge that this fast-paced industry requires.
Throughout the course, you will train in our professional standard kitchens studying techniques in preparing and cooking different types of dishes including pastry, bread, shellfish, meat and poultry and soups, stocks and desserts.
We're experts at what we do and we've trained staff for some of the top North East eateries including:
- Terry Laybourne's 21 Hospitality Group - including The Broad Chare and Cafe 21
- House of Tides
- Seaham Hall
- Six at BALTIC
- Jesmond Dene House
You'll train in our industry standard kitchens and commercial, student-run restaurant Enfields Kitchen based at Baltic Campus.
Assessment is mainly through observation of practical work and you'll have the opportunity to be re-assessed if needed. The assessment takes place throughout the year rather then being based on an end test or exam, so you will have plenty of opportunities to achieve the required standard.
Kit & Uniform
You will need to buy a Gateshead College kit and uniform to study on the programme. Details of how to buy this will be available during the course induction.
On completion of the course, you can progress into the hospitality or catering industry. Salaries start at around £15,000 and you could progress to earn well over £30,000 as a head chef. If you would like to continue your training, you can progress onto our Level 3 in Professional Cookery.
Days & Times
The course runs on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Tuesdays are theory based sessions until March and Wednesdays are kitchen based sessions until June.
