This course is ideal if you’d like to pursue a career as an Electrical Engineer or progress onto a degree course at university*.

You will develop your skills and knowledge in electrical engineering covering key areas such as engineering science and electrical and electronic principles.

This hands on course is taught at our world class Skills Academy for Automotive, Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics campus at Team Valley, where you’ll benefit from learning in our outstanding electrical and electronics workshops.

The most valuable requirement is experience working as an electrical engineer. You should also hold qualifications at Level 3 such as a BTEC Diploma in engineering or A Levels in physics and mathematics.

The course covers a range of subjects relating to engineering with emphasis on workplace application.

 

Year 1:

  • Engineering mathematics                                                  
  • Engineering science
  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Automation, robotics and programmable logic controllers (PLCs)

Year 2:

  • Managing a professional engineering project
  • Engineering design
  • Engineering management
  • Renewable energy 

 

The part time course is run over two evenings per week for two years (Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30-9pm)

* Progression to University courses vary by institution and you should check the entry requirements for any course you plan to take after an HNC.

The place of study

Skills Academy for Automotive, Manufacturing, Engineering and Logistics. Based at Team Valley, our purpose built £5.5million centre is a business led environment and features industry standard equipment including lathes, millers, grinders, fabrication and welding workshops, electronics laboratory, pneumatics, PLCs, and ICT suites with industry standard engineering simulation software packages, including MultiSim, Autocad & Inventor

Qualifications needed

An appropriate level 3 qualification

Mature students may be offered a place without these qualifications, depending on a satisfactory interview.

The cost of this course varies depending on your age and circumstances.

If you are under 19 years old, this course is free.

If you are aged over 19 years old you may qualify for free or reduced price course fees, depending on your circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 years over, you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee upfront in full and qualify for a 10% discount.
