The career opportunities in the construction industry are wide, varied and rewarding, taking you into such areas as design, management and surveying, alongside this there is an opportunity to progress academically from HNC through HND to BEng in your chosen field.

Major national ventures on the horizon include the building of new power generating stations at Hinkley Point in Somerset and Moorside in Cumbria, the planned HS2 rail link with the proposed HS3 already under discussion, alongside these large infrastructure projects, the 2017 Government Housing White Paper states more than 275,000 new homes are needed every year, the Construction Industry will be needed to achieve this.

In recent years, the stadia, arenas and accommodation for the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, two high-profile construction projects in which our construction industry has received praise from around the world, so enhancing our reputation and making our professionals some of the most sought after in the industry.

What will I study?

Mandatory modules include:

  • Individual Project
  • Construction Technology
  • Science and Materials
  • Construction Practice and Management
  • Legal and Statutory Responsibilities in Construction
  • Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification)
  • Surveying, Measuring and Setting Out

A further optional unit is undertaken to complete the qualification and ensure a wide range of relevant technical knowledge is gained, leading to possible career progression or further academic study.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment consists of a mixture of Pearson and centre set assignments  for each unit.

How will I be taught?

The programme is delivered by experienced practitioners who will be using a wide range of strategies to facilitate your learning in lectures, seminars and one to one tutorials.

Qualifications needed

A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and The Built Environment

A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent)

An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution

An international equivalent of the above

Required experience

We welcome applications from mature students without these qualifications but with relevant experience.
