Higher Education

There are two ways to study higher skills with Gateshead College.

Access to Higher Education

If you want to study for a degree but don’t hold the necessary qualifications, then an Access to Higher Education diploma could be for you. Our extensive range of Access Diplomas will give you a stepping stone to success and provide an intensive, fast track route into a degree.

Our courses are aimed at adults over 19 years old who maybe didn't get the grades they needed the first time around or are looking to change career path. The one-year courses provide the equivalent to A-levels and are designed to lead straight into university.

More importantly, it could cost you nothing to study with a range of financial support available, dependent on your age and circumstances.

Under 24 years old: you can study for free if you don’t already have a level 3 qualification or you are on eligible benefits. Find out more.

24 years old and above: loans available which you don’t pay back if you go on to a higher education course. Find out more.

UCAS Extra

If you have applied through UCAS and are not holding any offers, you may be able to apply through Extra for another course. Extra allows you to apply for courses with vacancies between the end of February and the end of June. In Extra, you apply for one course at a time using UCAS Track.

To be eligible for Extra you need to have already made five choices, received decisions from all these choices and either had no offers or declined all the offers you have received.

You can use the course search facility on the UCAS website to find courses that have vacancies.

Please contact us if you are interested in any of the courses at Gateshead College that are listed and we will confirm whether we are able to consider you. You should do this before you decline any offers you are holding.

Grants and loans

There are lots of different grants and loans you can apply for to help with fees and the costs of studying. Loans are low interest with nothing to pay upfront and you don’t start paying back until you’re earning over £21,000. If you are eligible for a grant, you don’t need to pay this back. Grants are based on your household income and personal circumstances.
