This course has been designed to help you gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed to work in the uniformed public services including the armed forces, police, fire or paramedics, or in local or national government. It's also valuable for those aiming for a career in social work, probation service and the youth and community services.
What will I study?
Throughout this qualification you will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills you need for successful employment in public services at officer or operative level. Units studied usually include:
- Government, Policies and the Public Services
- Leadership & Teamwork
- Crime and Custodial Care
- Fitness Testing
- Team Sports.
You'll also get involved in project work, sport and fitness development and team activities. You'll be assessed through a series of assignments and activities, with no formal exam.
We have very strong links with public services in the region, enabling us to offer you valuable first hand experience and practical activities. These have included:
- A residential trip with the army
- Personal development days with the army, navy and air force
- Insight and adventure day with the Royal Marines
- Role playing with the police during a major incident scenario exercise
- Visits to the magistrates crown courts
- Visits to prisons
- Insight days with the fire and rescue service
- Plus many other trips and guest speakers
You’ll have the opportunity to join one of our nine sport academies, where you will get:
Up to 9 hours of professional training each week, access to competitions and specialist sport academy coaches

If you prefer not to be part of a sport academy you will complete an employability project designed to further develop your skills.
What can I do after the course?
You can either apply for work in the uniformed services or for a university course. The full two years of this programme is equivalent to three A Levels.
Throughout the course you will need to wear a Gateshead College polo shirt and hooded sweatshirt, which you can buy at your induction.
Fast track to an apprenticeship
