This course has been designed to help you gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed to work in the public uniformed services including the armed forces, police, fire or paramedics, or in local or national government. It's also valuable for those aiming for a career in social work , probation service and the youth and community services.


What will I study?

Throughout this qualification you will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills you need for successful employment in public services at officer or operative level. Units studied usually include:

  • Government, Policies and the Public Services
  • Leadership & Teamwork
  • Citizenship
  • Crime and Custodial Care
  • Psychology
  • Fitness Testing
  • Team Sports


You'll also get involved in project work, sport and fitness development and team activities. You'll be assessed through a series of assignments and activities, with no formal exam.


Work experience

We have very strong links with public services in the region, enabling us to offer you valuable first hand experience and practical activities. These have included:

  • A residential trip with the Army
  • Personal development days with the Army, Navy and RAF
  • Insight and adventure day with the Royal Marines
  • Role playing with the Police during a major incident scenario exercise
  • Visits to the Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts
  • Visits to the Prisons
  • Insight days with the Fire and Rescue Services
  • plus many other trips and guest speakers


What can I do after the course?

You can either apply for work in the uniformed services or for a university course. The full two years of this programme is equivalent to 3 A Levels.



Throughout the course you will need to wear a Gateshead College polo shirt and hooded sweatshirt, which you can buy at your induction.


Fast track to an apprenticeship 

If you're interested in an apprenticeship but you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first, no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

Required experience

We welcome all applicants without any prior experience or knowledge in this area. You will need motivation to achieve and have a passion to gain skills enabling you to progress this as a career in the future.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
