This programme provides a learning experience that is individually tailored to you, to prepare you for entry into higher education or directly into a sports-related job. We'll focus on developing your academic ability as well as your practical skills and employability.

You will study:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Sports nutrition
  • Current issues in sport
  • Exercise for specific groups
  • Fitness training and programming.

You will also take part in work experience and will have the opportunity to join one of fantastic sport academies.

The study programme

The course is planned around you to meet the needs of your career aspirations. The course will provide learning experience individually tailored for you, to prepare you for entry into higher education or directly into a sports-related job. We'll focus on developing not just your academic ability, but your vocational and employability skills.You will also complete a work experience unit . All of this will help you along the road to deciding the type of role you are suited to, and prepare you for work, and maybe even move you into a job.

 

Maths and English

As well as doing the Level 3 Diploma in Sport you will also have lessons developing your functional skills, maths or English as they are an essential requirement when working in the sports industry.

Employability skills will also be taught as part of the curriculum so we can prepare you and give you the skills that will make you stand out in the jobs market. Individual tutorials will provide you the opportunity to communicate directly with your teaching team to track your progress and ask questions about your course.

 

Sport academies

As a full time student, you'll have the opportunity to join one of our nine Sport Academies where you will receive the following for your chosen sport:

 ● Up to 9 hours of professional training each week, access to competitions and specialist sport academy coaches
● Free access to physiotherapy assessments and treatment

● The opportunity to compete in local, national and international competitions
● A personalised training and development programme
● Access to some of the best facilities in the country with two 11-a-side 3G football pitches, sports science and medicine facilities, a performance lab, an aerobics studio and a superb 83m long athletics hall.

 

This time is built into your timetable. The college has been the national champion consistently across a range of sports over the last decade, we want and expect the best - could this be you?  If you do not wish to join one of our academies you will complete an employment related project designed to develop further your employability skills.

 

Teaching, learning and assessment

You will be assessed by your tutor through methods including assignment work, practical sessions and course work. You do not need to sit any exams. The majority of your learning will take place at Gateshead College's Academy for Sport at Gateshead International Stadium.

 

Progression

Successful completion will give you the necessary skills to seek work within the leisure industry or to progress onto another course, then onto university. On completion of the course , you will be offered a variety of academic and vocational routes which include progressing to complete a second year of a Diploma in Sport or a vocational route which will provide further qualifications for you to work as a coach, gym instructor, sports leader or another entry-level role within sport.

This course carries the following UCAS points

After completion of Year 1 you can gain between 16 - 56 UCAS points depending on your overall final grade.

After completion of Year 2 you can gain between 32 - 112 UCAS points depending on your overall final grade and these points will also include your points from the first year.

Qualifications needed

5 GCSE's A* - C (9 - 4) grade including either Maths or English

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
