This qualification encompasses the essential skills, knowledge and understanding you will require in gaining confidence and progression in the field of health and social care. Your programme of study will prepare you for progression within education or into employment in the sector. Eventually, this study programme could enable you to progress onto higher education or into the world of work and into professions such as home care worker, senior care worker, social worker, health services manager, nursing, home care manager, paramedic, physiotherapist and midwifery. Salaries for these occupations range from £14,000 to £38,000.
The college has excellent links with many relevant and high quality work experience placements and as part of your study programme, you will have the opportunity to undertake work experience and gain real 'hands-on' experience in a relevant setting such as a care home, nursery, hospital or other specialist area and will relate learning in the classroom to health and care settings. This valuable experience will further develop your skills and knowledge and aid your career choice.
Your main programme will include topics such as, Human Lifespan Development, working in Health & Social Care, Meeting Individual Support Needs, Principles of Safe Practice including safeguarding. You will also have the opportunity to study a range of optional units including, Physiological Disorders and a Work Experience Unit.
We will use a range of exciting and innovative strategies for teaching and learning to ensure the programme is interesting, challenging and ensures you are job ready. Your programme will be delivered by teachers who are enthusiastic and passionate about the subject area. All teachers have excellent vocational experience who remain up to date by returning to practice in relevant health and care settings.
You will learn and develop your skills by using a range of teaching and learning methods including practical activities, demonstrations and guest speakers, going on trips and visits, by having an individual learning plan, setting your own targets during tutorial sessions and by teachers ensuring there are opportunities for you to stretch and challenge your own learning and development. You will complete a range of assessments including poster and presentation work, assignments, case studies and projects.
You will access our excellent practical facilities including IT classrooms, a well-stocked library and purpose built classrooms that contain resources relating to the health care field.
You will follow a study programme to help you develop a range of skills that will support your progress to employment or to further study and will give you the edge in the jobs market. This will include English and maths by continuing to embed and build on your skills as these subjects are relevant to the industry you are interested in working in.
You will develop skills in communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of job pursuit workshops, and will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as those around equality and diversity, fundraising and entrepreneurial skills.
You will be required to complete 4 weeks block placement in an Adult Social Care setting during the year and you will be support by a tutor who will visit you in the setting. You will be required to achieve all these aspects of your course as well as the main programme.
