Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings

If you would like to work in the health, social care or childcare sector and are keen to progress to level 2 study this course is for you. 

The course provides a sound foundation and understanding of the topics relevant to aspects of health, child care and social care including communication, health and safety, rights and the needs of others and is delivered by ambitious and passionate teachers who regularly return to practice to ensure they maintain their knowledge and skills of the sector. 

As part of your course, you will access the excellent practical resources in our fully equipped nursery that will enable you to get real 'hands-on' experience of what it would be like to work in a nursery before undertaking your work placement.


You will learn by a range of activities including:

  • Practical activities
  • Demonstrations
  • Guest speakers
  • An individual learning plan
  • Setting your own targets during tutorial sessions
  • Teachers ensuring there are opportunities for you to stretch and challenge your learning and development


You will complete a range of assessments including poster and presentation work, assignments, case studies and projects.

You will follow a study programme to help you develop a range of skills that will support your progress to employment or to further study. This will include English and maths as these skills are required all of the time at work and will be embedded into your study programme to enable you understand how these skills are used in the industry your are interested in working in. 


You will learn about communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of job pursuit workshops, and will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as fundraising activities and voluntary work. You will be required to achieve all these aspects of your course as well as the main programme.

Work experience 

You will develop skills and knowledge employers look for by completing 30+ hours of vocational work experience. This vocational experience will be in the format of ‘block weeks’ and is a great opportunity on a Level 1 programme.

English and maths
We will put a programme together that best meets your needs and might mean working towards GCSE English and maths, a pre-GCSE qualification or functional skills. 

Success, progression and employment

After successful progression and completion of level 2 in either health and care or childcare, you could progress into the following type of jobs, nursery assistant, health care worker, home carer, teaching assistant, home care worker, care escort and youth and community worker and could earn a salary between £12,000 and £30,000.

Qualifications needed

1 GCSE grade D (3) or above, ideally in English, a mix of E-F grades in other subjects and the ability to demonstrate a real interest in working in the care sector.

This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced price course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.
