Once in a work placement, you will work alongside professional childcare workers and learn practical skills that you will relate to learning in the classroom. You will complete work placement in a range of settings and with different age ranges of children including nurseries, day nurseries and primary schools.
On completion of the course, you could progress to a Level 3 programme or could enter the world of work in the following types of roles; educational support assistant, teaching assistant, play worker, special needs education assistant or nursery assistant. Salaries for these types of roles range from £11,000 - £18,000 per year.
Your study programme will be delivered by teachers who are vocationally competent and passionate about the subject area. All teachers maintain their industry knowledge and skills by returning to practice at least once per year. During your course, you will gain an understanding of all aspects of childcare, child development, child safety, learning and play and communication. You will learn and develop your skills by using a range of exciting and innovative teaching and learning methods including going on trips and visits, for example to Beamish Museum and Centre for Life, guest speakers, projects, presentations, posters and displays and by completing assignment work. Your teachers will work with you to ensure an individual learning plan is in place that will stretch and challenge you to ensure you reach your full potential and you will do this by setting targets in your own electronic action plan.
Your study programme will support your progress to employment or to further study and will include tutorial sessions, communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of job pursuit workshops, you will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as equality and diversity and fundraising activities and will develop skills and knowledge in English and maths. We know you will be required to use English and maths all of the time at work and how crucial it is we support you to develop these skills further and that is relevant to the industry you are interested in working in. We will identify what you can do when you join us then put a programme together which best meets your needs.
