This course will prepare you to become an Early Years Educator, giving you the skills to:

  • Work with children in an unsupervised role from birth to 5 years
  • Gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years
  • Progress onto higher education.


You will gain valuable 'hands-on' experience in our outstanding nursery classroom and will carry out a range of activities in this setting prior to commencing substantial work placement and during your course.

You will learn by a range of activities including practical activities, such as going on trips and visits for example to Beamish Museum and the Centre for Life, by demonstrations and guest speakers, by having an individual learning plan, setting your own targets during tutorial sessions and by teachers ensuring there are opportunities for you to stretch and challenge your learning and development. You will complete a range of assessments including poster and presentation work, assignments, case studies and projects.

You will follow a study programme to help you develop a range of skills that will support your progress to employment or to further study. This will include communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of job pursuit workshops, you will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as working with local organisations such as Seven Stories (The National Centre for Children's Books), undertake projects around equality and diversity, take part in fundraising activities and you will further develop skills and knowledge in English and maths.

English and maths
We know how important it is you continue to develop your skills and knowledge of English and maths as this is what employers want their employees to be competent in. We will put a programme together which best meets your needs and will embed these subjects into your curriculum. 

You will be required to achieve all these aspects of your study programme as well as the Diploma.

Work experience
We have excellent links with high quality placement providers and employers and you would develop all of the practical skills and knowledge employers are looking for and that will make you among the most highly prized in the jobs market. You will work in a range of placement settings, essential for achievement of this qualification including nurseries, day nurseries and primary schools and with different age ranges of children. We will enable you to develop the right work ethic, attitude and softer skills that can make a real difference to any organisation you join.

Success, progression and employment
Upon completion you could potentially progress into higher education or enter the workforce as an Early Years Educator in roles such as a nursery nurse, special educational needs teaching professional, primary school or nursery teacher or teaching assistant with salaries for these types of jobs ranging from £12,000 to £43,000.

About our teachers
Your teachers will be experienced and enthusiastic practitioners in the field and maintain their knowledge and skills by returning to practice at least once a year. You will learn about a range of topics including health and well-being, legislation, frameworks and professional practice, play and learning for school readiness and professional development.

An interview is required and a DBS check is required.

Qualifications needed

5 GCSE grades A* - C (9 - 4) including English, maths and science (or equivalent)

Required experience

Relevant work experience in a childcare setting - this will be discussed at interview.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
