This programme provides a great starting point for you to build a career in the events and entertainment industries as a member of a production team.

You will work on events and on productions with performers in music, dance, drama and with working professionals. This will enable you to develop skills in a broad range of offstage production skills. You will also benefit from Gateshead Colleges’ status as a founder member of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills. This will give you access to exclusive contacts and national competitions.

The course is designed to provide you with a wide range of practical and technical skills relating to key aspects of theatre and concert production. In basic terms, you'll cover the following elements:

  • You will explore event planning, lighting, sets and props, electrical safety and installation, live sound production and concert sound. 
  • You will be assessed in practical, work-based situations such as working in a role on a theatre production or a gig.The programme has a practical focus.
  • You studies will includes involvement in the annual Northern Stage residency.

You could progress onto a range of Higher Education courses at Foundation or BA Hons Degree level at university where you could specialise in areas including lighting design, sound, technical theatre, performance design and events management.

There are extensive career opportunities including stage management, lighting design and operation, theatre and concert sound, stage design, costume and wardrobe, production management, front of house, marketing and promotion, audio visual installation and conference and exhibition management.

By continual observation of your practical work, projects, assignments, oral and written questions

How will I be taught?

This is a very practical programme and you'll spend most of your week at a working theatre, learning the ropes from professionals. You'll spend time at College too, getting more practical training in design crafts as well as developing your underpinning knowledge.

Qualifications needed

You will need GCSE English at Grade 4 (C) or above, plus 3 other GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above (preferably including Maths). Relevant vocational qualifications at Level 2 will be considered.

Required experience

We welcome all applicants without any prior experience or knowledge in this area. You will need motivation to achieve and have a passion to gain skills enabling you to progress this as a career in the future.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
