Gateshead College in partnership with the renowned Dance City come together to offer aspiring young contemporary dancers an exciting, challenging and innovative course.

 

This vocational programme offers a unique opportunity to explore and develop skills across a multitude of disciplines including classical ballet, contemporary, jazz and choreography. With an emphasis on practical activity with high level comprehensive pure dance training delivered by professionals from Dance City, the course aims to develop your technique, artistic understanding and overall fitness levels to prepare you fully for a dance career.

 

Your study will be divided between Gateshead College's Baltic Campus and the fantastic purpose built facilities at Dance City in Newcastle. As a result you have will access to the very best dance studios, performances, spaces and teaching in the region.

 

We are looking for confident, artistic individuals who are passionate about dance. You need to have a good basic grounding in at least one dance style and some performance experience. The ability to work effectively as part of a group, respond creatively and enthusiastically to set tasks and be self motivating is a must! A keen interest in dance as an industry and a willingness to embrace and tackle new challenges is also essential!

 

This specialist qualification will enable you to progress to further vocational training or dance and performing arts degrees. Recent graduates are currently studying at Rambert, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, The Place, London Studios, Bodyworks, UEL, Bucks University and Northern School of Contemporary Dance.  

 

All students must participate in a practical audition. Preliminary auditions are held at the Baltic Campus in February and April with successful applicants progressing to a final audition at Dance City in May. In audition students must be able to demonstrate the following:

 

  • A basic grounding in one or more dance style
  • Excellent basic coordination
  • Excellent musicality and sense of rhythm
  • Good ability to pick up movement and to push themselves physically
  • Good physical potential – loose joints, turn out,
  • A desire to dance/teach/choreograph as a career

It is desirable for students to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A basic grounding in classical technique
  • Good natural dance qualities
  • Creativity and a basic ability to create dance movement
  • A good fitness level

 

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on a continual basis using workshop based assignments designed to develop and build your practical skills in both rehearsal and performance. Your understanding will also be tested too, using a range of methods including written and/or oral questioning and presentations.

 

How will I be taught?

Delivery will consist of a combination of practical and theoretical activities which will allow you to develop, consolidate and apply your knowledge and skills in realistic work based scenarios. As the vocational emphasis allows training to be focused on the skills you need to work in the industry, it is ideal if you know you want a career in dance.

 

What can I do after this course?

On completion of this course you can continue your studies with Gateshead College by progressing onto our HND Dance Professional Practice course. This two-year course, delivered in partnership with Dance City, is two years of a full degree programme which can be 'topped up' to a full honours degree on completion.

How will I be assessed?

Continuous assessment using class based assignments and portfolio of evidence

You'll be assessed on your practical skill through performances, rehearsals and other practical sessions. Your knowledge will be assessed using tests, assignments and other methods.

How will I be taught?

The course is very practical, and is delivered by tutors with a wealth of experience.

Qualifications needed

You will need GCSE English at Grade 4 (C) or above, plus 3 other GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above (preferably including Maths). Relevant vocational qualifications at Level 2 will be considered. You will also need to pass an audition.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
