This study programme is designed for people who are passionate about business skills and want to develop a range of personal skills and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. More than just a qualification, this study programme includes all the ingredients to make you the best you can be, to give you an edge in the jobs market or if you’re moving onto further study. It is personal to you and is made up of a range of activity; the majority of time will be spent on the qualification you choose to study and will be a mix of practical work and theory, all shaped around the technical skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.  The rest of your time will be spent in English and maths, work experience, tutorials and reviews along with a range of other activities designed to boost your CV in some way.

What will I study?

This course is split into three projects per year where you will develop your knowledge to successfully work on real life industry briefs that will enable you to become both employable and innovative.

Topics covered include:

  • Business enterprise
  • Human resources
  • Event management
  • Finance
  • Marketing

You will be given the opportunity to take part in a 'Dragon's Den' style event and work on event organisation and management for external partners. You will also have access to the college's tutorial programme which equips you for the world outside of college through money management training, visits to employers, help with job hunting, interviews and confidence building.

Employer Mentoring Scheme

You'll also be part of an Employer Mentoring Scheme where you will work with a mentor from a local business to help improve your skills further. The possibilities with this scheme are endless. Past students have been given real-life projects to work on, visited their mentors at work and been given opportunities to showcase their work.

Our Teachers

You will be taught by a highly qualified and entrepreneurial team of teachers who have industry back grounds in training, accountancy, recruitment, marketing and HR. This team has a wealth of knowledge which will enable you to develop strong employability skills that will increase your job opportunities. This team has developed strong industry links with local businesses in Gateshead and Newcastle which can open up exciting new job opportunities.

English and maths

You use these skills all the time in work and they are crucially important for employers. Studying English and maths in college is different to school and you will see how these skills are relevant to the industry you are interested in working in.  We look at what you can do when you join us and then we’ll put a programme together which best meets your needs and aspirations. This might mean working towards a pre-GCSE qualification or towards an A*-C grade in GCSE English and maths and, if you’ve already achieved this, you’ll continue to build on your skills in these subjects.

Work Experience

We want you to be job ready when you leave us and able to put what you have learnt into practice in the workplace. Relevant and high quality work experience placements, employer mentoring, commercial and vocational projects will help you to do this and are an important part of your study programme. Plus make an impression on an employer and who knows where that could lead.

Tutorial and Reviews

This is our opportunity to support you, to set your targets, keep you on track and make sure you achieve what you’re capable of.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The course has a different approach to it – you don’t study a unit at a time – you work on employer-led projects. These projects are run in conjunction with local employers who set actual briefs for you to work on and show you what it's really like to work in the industry.  You will be showcasing your work with an on-line digital portfolio which you will be able to take to future employers and show off your skills.  You will learn industry standard techniques and skills to make you stand out from the crowd using state of the art equipment and gadgets in dedicated business classrooms.

What can I do after the course?

When you have successfully completed year 1 you will progress onto year 2. You can then go on to further study with us such as a Foundation Degree in Business Management or apply for a degree programme at university. This diploma will also equip you with the skills required for a variety of different career paths, such as sales and marketing, finance, retail and customer service in all business sectors.

You’ll study at our £39million Baltic Campus on Gateshead Quays. This academy is equipped with the latest learning resources as well as modern classrooms, the latest IT, relaxed social spaces, a gym, three places to eat and a Costa Coffee.
