The retail industry is vital to the UK economy; in 2015 alone it generated £340billion worth of retail sales. It is the largest private sector employer with approximately 290,315 bricks and mortar retail outlets in the UK, saying nothing for all of its online operations.

This study programme brings together enterprise, retail and marketing to offer you a unique opportunity to broaden your skills in retail and business management. Whether you wish to run your own business or are aiming for a career in a customer-facing role or a position in head office, this course will give you a head start in gaining employment in the retail sector.

What will I study?

Project 1 – Planning your Own Business

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own your own business? This project could make it a reality. You will research the market and come up with a business idea, plan it and pitch it to some experienced local entrepreneurs who may be willing to invest.

Project 2 – The World of Retail

Jobs in the retail sector in this region increased by 3.8% between 2014 and 2015. This project will see you developing your understanding of the vast world of retail both online and offline. Our retail partner Handpicked will work with you to develop crucial skills such as customer service and personal selling through which will support you to gain employment in the retail sector.

Project 3 – The Power of Brands and Digital Marketing.

How do retailers such as ASOS, Marks and Spencer, Hollister make us want their products? It’s all in the marketing. In this project you will learn about the power of brands, traditional marketing and digital marketing through designing marketing campaigns including websites for live design briefs. 50% of digital marketing jobs were left unfilled in 2015, this project will see you develop and understanding of digital marketing to help bridge the skills gap.

Mentoring Scheme

Along with this you will be part of an employer based mentoring scheme where you will work with a mentor from a local business to help improve your skills further. The possibilities with this scheme are endless, students have been given real-life projects to work on, visited their mentors at work and been given opportunities to showcase their work.  This scheme, along with our tutorial programme will help you become work ready as well as preparing you for the outside world with training on money management, help with job hunting, interviews and confidence building.

English and maths

You use these skills all the time in work and they are crucially important for employers. Studying English and maths in college is different to school and you will see how these skills are relevant to the industry you are interested in working in.  We look at what you can do when you join us and then we’ll put a programme together which best meets your needs and aspirations. This might mean working towards a pre-GCSE qualification or towards an A*-C grade in GCSE English and maths and, if you’ve already achieved this, you’ll continue to build on your skills in these subjects.
