This course will give you the practical skills and knowledge you need to get no just one, but two recognised qualifications (body repair and paint refinishing), giving you the best possible start for a career in the repair and refinishing industry.

 

This is a practical, hands on course, and you'll get to work with the latest vehicles and industry standard resources. Using our outstanding facilities and equipment you will develop skills in all aspects of vehicle body repair and paint refinishing. You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of the different job roles in the Automotive industry. 

 

What will I study?

The course will give you the technical skills needed by today’s motor vehicle repair industry, including diagnosis and rectification procedures for accident damage and paint rectification. It provides the essential knowledge that you'll need to work as a body repairer or paint refinisher working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body repair shops.

 

You will study theory and practical aspects of: 

  • Body Units
  • Removing and Fitting Non-Permanently Fixed Motor Vehicle Body Panels
  • Removing and Replacing Exterior Motor Vehicle Panels Including Permanently Fixed Components
  • Minor Motor Vehicle Exterior Body Panel Repairs
  • Motor Vehicle Body MIG/MAG Welding Techniques
  • Motor Vehicle Body Resistance Spot Welding Operations

 

Paint Units

  • Tools and Equipment used in Vehicle Refinishing
  • Applying Fillers and Foundation Materials
  • Preparing Metal and Pre-painted Surfaces
  • Repairing Minor Paint Defects
  • Vehicle Body Adhesive Bonding Operations
 

As part of your study programme you will be given the opportunity to take up a work experience placement in the automotive industry, working with local employers to further enhance your employability skills and knowledge.

 

The assessment of this study programme is made up of set practical tasks and projects which will result in a portfolio of practical evidence, set online exams assessing your subject knowledge and written assignments/coursework.

 

This qualification also forms the knowledge component or technical certificate of an advanced level apprenticeship which, along with the required maths and English qualifications makes up part of the apprenticeship framework giving you a head start over other candidates.

 

Over 90% of our learners’ progress onto the next level or secure apprenticeships, we currently have apprentices with over 150 local employers’ including large manufacturing companies like Nissan or reputable employers such as Go Northeast, Nationwide Accident Repair, Bristol Street Motors or specialists in vehicle restoration like Aston Martin Workshops.

 

The place of study

You will be working in our state of the art workhops in a fantastic building purposely built and designed for motor industry related subjects. All our workshops are fully equipped with the latest vehicles and industry standard equipment giving you the best experience and skills.

An interview is required and equipment is needed.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the programme by use of practical assessments within our workshops and also via assessments. You will also need to build a portfolio of evidence that will be submitted to the awarding body at the end of the programme.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught in our state of the art workshops working on the latest vehicles supported by tutors with years of industrial experience. The majority of this programme will be in the workshops working on vehicles and within the body and paintshops.

Qualifications needed

Level 1 Body and Repair or a good level of practical experience and an interview.

You will need to sit an initial assessment in numeracy and literacy, and demonstrate that you are capable of working at level 2. Followed with advice and guidance to ensure you are on the right course.

Required experience

Basic knowledge of the automotive industry is desirable.

We welcome applications from mature students without these qualifications but with relevant experience.

This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced price course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.
