If you are looking for a career in engineering, this course will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to enable you to progress into an apprenticeship, employment or further training in this sector.


The course is designed around the skills base required by employers for multi-skilled maintenance technicians and engineers. It also gives you the platform to move on to a wider range of engineering roles.Through hands-on practical activities, you’ll gain skills in programmable logic control (PLCs), electronics, wiring and testing electrical circuits and computer aided design, together with a understanding of the manufacturing environment and solving problems in the workplace.  As part of the study programme you will also study workplace health and safety, welding and sheet metalwork.


This qualification will give you the base for a career as a Technician / Engineer in a range of engineering roles including maintenance, production, manufacturing, quality and design engineering. We currently train apprentices for large manufacturing companies such as Nissan UK, SCA and Nexus.

Based at Team Valley, our purpose built £5.5million Skills Academy for Automotive, Manufacturing, and Engineering is a business led environment and features industry standard equipment and workshops including CNC equipment, lathes, millers, grinders, fabrication and welding workshops, an electronics laboratory, pneumatics, PLCs and ICT suites with industry standard engineering simulation software packages, including MultiSim, Autocad & Inventor

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in two ways: Practical workshops - you will create products to a specification using a range of engineering practices which will then be assessed by our highly qualified tutors to ensure that you are achieving standards of excellence. Theory - you will produce written assignments based on material taught both in classroom and workshop sessions

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a combination of classroom and practical workshop sessions. Computers will be an intergral part of your study using virtual learning environments (Moodle), design software, internet for research and presentations. Practical workshop sessions are very hands on and you will be constantly supported to ensure you develop confidence and expertise in using engineering equipment. Your Health and Safety is of paramount importance and you will receive rigorous Health and Safety Training in this programme

Qualifications needed

GCSE Grade C (4) or above in Maths, English and Science

Required experience

If you don't have the qualifications for entry, appropriate experience of working in the field of engineering may be suitable to gain a place on the course. This would be assessed at interview and you would need to complete an initial assessment activity.

This course is free to those aged under 19 years old.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced price course fees and there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help cover the costs of coming to college, depending on your circumstances.
