If you're excited by cars and want to enter into the vehicle repair industries but are unsure which path to follow, this full time course is for you. Accredited by the IMI (Institute of Motor Industry), it's a hands-on course with a focus on practical activities and we maximise the amount of time you spend in our state-of-the-art workshops.
What will I study?
Depending on your chosen route you'll study both the theory and practical aspects of both mechanical and body repair:
Engines and power units
Suspension and braking systems
Wheels, tyres and exhausts
Cooling and electrical systems
Accident damage repair techniques
Panel removal and replacement
Vehicle fabrication and welding
All aspects of paint refinishing
In addition to gaining a formal qualification in body repair you will also complete a paint refinishing qualification, so that by the end of your programme you'll achieve two qualifications and have the skills and experience of both of these specialist areas.
The first six weeks of the course gives you a chance to experience the different aspects of the automotive industry including mechanical, servicing, body repair and paint refinishing. After this you will have gained the necessary experience and knowledge to make an educated decision as to which discipline you would like to follow as your career path.
The course helps you develop the technical skills needed to work in today’s motor vehicle industry, including basic processes, principles and foundation skills. It will provide you with the essential knowledge you need to work as a technician working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist repair shops.
You'll gain practical skills in basic motor vehicle maintenance, repair and service, while studying towards at least one nationally recognised qualification.

English and maths
As part of your study programme you will also attend maths and English sessions and have the opportunity to improve your GCSE grades and gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.
You'll be working in the very best training workshops on the latest vehicles and industry standard resources. You will also be given the opportunity to take up a work experience placement to get a taste of the industry, working with local employers to further enhance your skills and knowledge.

Success, progression and employment
Over 90% of our learners’ progress onto the next level or secure apprenticeships, we currently have apprentices with over 150 local employers partners including large manufacturing companies like Nissan and reputable employers such as Arriva, Go North East, Bristol Street Motors, Bells Trucks, Nationwide Accident Repair, CF Recovery or specialists in vehicle restoration like Aston Workshop.
Motor vehicle technicians service and repair all types of vehicles including cars, vans, motorbikes and heavy vehicles like coaches and lorries. They work on all areas of vehicle mechanics and electrics, from the engine and exhaust systems to the air-conditioning and security features.
As a mechanical technician, your duties would include:
- Finding and identifying faults
- Advising customers if repairs are needed and how critical they are
- Providing time and cost estimates for jobs
- Carrying out repairs and replacing damaged parts
- Road testing the vehicle to check the repair work
- MOT and pre-delivery inspection of vehicles
- Carrying out routine servicing and checks
As vehicles become more sophisticated, you could specialise in repairing the technology used to control vehicle systems.
