This A Level offers the opportunity to study political behaviour, processes and institutions. You will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the political systems of the UK. You will also examine key components of the US political system as well as exploring issues and ideologies that drive political debates. This subject will be of interest to you if you are keen to discuss and learn more about current affairs and political issues


Your knowledge and skills will be assessed in a variety of ways including:

  • Frequent topic tests
  • Mock assessments
  • Practical assessments
  • Exams; you'll sit one written exam as the end of year 1 and three exams at the end of year 2

What can I study alongside this A Level?

 Many students choose to study history, English literature, English language, sociology or psychology depending on the university degree or career they have in mind.

What are the career opportunities?

Students who study the course have access to a wide range of career and higher education opportunities. By the end of the course you will have learned to evaluate and analyse information, work independently and communicate complex ideas effectively. All these skills are recognised and valued by employers and universities. Politics provides a basis for a number of popular careers, including journalism, law and business. You may even become the future Prime Minister!

Qualifications needed

Average grade 6 GCSE profile (Higher entry criteria is required for anyone looking to study Maths and/or Sciences at A Level). However, if you do not meet this profile please still come to an Open Event to discuss all options with a member of the A Level Team.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
