Section 1: Subject Overview


BTEC sport lessons are based at the Sports Academy on Neilson Road, next to Gateshead International Stadium. This gives students access to outstanding facilities that help to create an engaging and enriching learning environment. Students have the opportunity to utilise the; International Indoor track, Sports Science lab, and strength and conditioning gym as part of their education. This includes access to an environmental chamber and performance analysis equipment that you would see at Universities. The outstanding level of facilities at the site is why the South African rugby team chose to train at the facility during the recent World Cup and it is also why Newcastle Falcons RFU, conduct their preseason testing at the Sports Academy.


The course is a mixture of academic and practically delivered lessons to allow student to be able to gain an outstanding understanding of the factors that affect participation in physical activity and sport. The course looks at the six key topic areas that impact participation levels and how it effects practical performance.


The three areas:


1 Anatomy for Sport and Exercise

2 Sport and Exercise Physiology

3 Sport and Exercise Psychology


Section 2: Assessment Overview

All units are internally assessed in the BTEC qualifications in this specification. All assessment for the BTEC qualifications in this specification is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes. Each unit within the qualification has specified assessment and grading criteria which are to be used for grading purposes. A summative unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction.


Section 3: What do other students study alongside Sports and Exercise Science at A Level?

Many of our students will study a science subject. Such as, Biology, Physics, or Psychology alongside Sports and Exercise Science. Some may choose a completely different subject like English or Sociology.


Section 4: What are the possible career opportunities after successful completion of this course?

This course lends itself to a range of careers in sports and fitness as well as other industries that you may not have considered before. Some careers that you could consider doing with sports and exercise science include:

  • Sports science
  • PE teacher
  • Physiotherapist
  • Professional sportsperson
  • Sports coach/consultant
  • Sports policy at local and national level
  • Diet and fitness instructor
  • Personal trainer

The College has very good links with Gateshead Football Club and Colleges in America. Elite athletes in the past have gained scholarships with Colleges in America to study a range of courses including accountancy and sports courses along with competing at the highest level.

Qualifications needed

Average grade 6 GCSE profile (Higher entry criteria is required for anyone looking to study Maths and/or Sciences at A Level). However, if you do not meet this profile please still come to an Open Event to discuss all options with a member of the A Level Team.

This course is free to those aged 19 years and under.

Most people aged 19 years and over can qualify for free or reduced course fees. This depends on your individual circumstances.

If you already have a full level 3 qualification and are aged 19 or over you can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan or pay the fee in full upfront, minus a 10% discount.
