Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Technical Theatre: Sound, Lighting and Stage

Technical Theatre plays a vital role in creating the right ambience for audiences to enjoy theatrical and other live performances.

We know that back-stage and off-stage jobs are particularly challenging to recruit to because each job can be highly specialised. Progression routes are also difficult to identify, with a need for technical workers to move into supervisory roles alongside gaining recognised qualifications which are both supported and recognised by entertainment industry employers.

Technical Theatre is a key part of the UK's Performing Arts Industry: around 5,500 businesses, employing 100,000 people. The Performing Arts Industry is growing rapidly and 30,000 skilled workers will be required  in off stage/back stage roles by 2017, with a forecast shortage of 6,000.

Delivered in partnership with Sage Gateshead, the Advanced Level Technical Theatre Apprenticeship has been designed in partnership with employers to widen the pool of potential recruits into the industry and to provide them with the skills in a choice of three specialist areas: Lighting, Sound & Stage.

On the Lighting pathway:

Apprentices train as a Lighting Technician (or Lead Lighting Technician), Senior Electrician / Deputy Head of Electrics, Board / Console Operator, or Maintenance Supervisor / Manager. Their roles can include operating lighting for a live performance and supervising the operation of lighting control systems.

On the Sound pathway:

Apprentices train as a Senior Sound Technician. They'll be able to plan sound requirements for a live performance, move, set-up and connect live sound equipment, and mix live sound.

On the Stage pathway:

Apprentices train as a Senior Stage Technician or an Head Flyman. They'll be able to assist with the running of an ongoing production, set up flying equipment and components for use during a live performance, and source materials and equipment for sets.
