Intermediate Level Apprenticeship In Business and Administration

This apprenticeship is ideal for employees working in roles such as:

  • administrators,
  • office juniors,
  • receptionists,
  • medical receptionists,
  • junior legal secretaries
  • junior medical secretaries.

This Apprenticeship  will provide the necessary skills to play an important support role within a business or organisation. Administrators handle the day-to-day tasks in an office and make sure things run smoothly – 97% of employers say that effective administration is essential to their business, so they do a crucial job. 

Apprenticeship Content

•BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration Combined (Competence and Knowledge) qualification.This is a work based qualification that combines competence and technical knowledge to give you the practical competences, technical skills and sector-related knowledge you need in order to carry out a job effectively. You will work towards your qualification in the workplace.

•Functional Skills- English at Level 1, Mathematics at Level 1 and Information and Communication Technology at Level 1. These will be delivered at the College.

•ERR – Employee Rights and Responsibilities

•PLTS – Personal Learning and Thinking Skills comprise six skill areas that are essential to being successful in an apprenticeship.They comprise creative thinking, independent enquiry, reflective learning, team working, self-management and effective participation.


Your apprentice may attend Gateshead College for in-class sessions on dates which are agreed with you.  Alternatively you might prefer your apprentice to study in the work-place at their own pace.  Study methods and attendance pattern will be discussed and agreed with you and your employer before starting.

How is the apprenticeship assessed?

A trainer / assessor will visit your apprentice in your workplace to assist them to compile a portfolio of evidence.  The knowledge based units may be assessed either by assignments or knowledge based tests.  Functional Skills are assessed by on-line tests and assessments.  Apprentices who have the appropriate GCSE grades or Functional Skills may be exempt from completing the Functional Skills.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no mandatory entry requirements for this apprenticeship framework, employers are looking to attract applicants who have a keen interest in business. They expect applicants to demonstrate a "can do" attitude and have at least basic numeracy and literacy skills on which the apprenticeship will build. Ideally candidates will have 4 GCSE grades A-C to include a communication and mathematics subject (or ICT related qualification). Equivalent qualifications would be considered.


The duration of the apprenticeship programme is at least 12 months.
